USBBY members take action. Members enjoy year-round opportunities to be involved in and move forward all aspects of the children’s book world - locally, nationally, and, of course, internationally.
This installment of BRIDGES highlights Your Membership at Work, the opportunities that attending and making connections at the upcoming Regional Conference can afford, and new channels for enjoying an active membership. Also, the tireless Patsy Aldana provides this issue’s guest post, wherein she discusses USBBY/IBBY’s partnership with REFORMA and efforts to afford book access to children in dire circumstances as led by IBBY El Salvador, IBBY Guatemala, and IBBY Mexico. Keep reading to learn about ongoing and new opportunities to participate in the world of USBBY!

USBBY invites members to submit nominations for the IBBY/IPA sponsored response to a new UN project, the Sustainable Goals Book Club.
While several USBBY activities are committee-based, this one provides a chance to do something individually and now. While book lists corresponding to some of the Sustainable Goals have already been decided upon and published, there still exist many more to create by the end of next year. Please use this link to access the nomination form, and please indicate your affiliation with USBBY/IBBY in the appropriate field on the form. Want to increase your engagement with USBBY/IBBY? Become a State Ambassador!
State Ambassadors around the country come up with myriad ways to engage their local and state communities in the promotion of international children's literature throughout the year; and USBBY State Ambassadors are playing multiple roles in the IBBY Regional Conference on October 25-27, 2019 in Austin.
USBBY members and affiliates head to Regional Conference for a variety of reasons, top of the list being its intimate size. With a cap of only a few hundred people, the conference provides multiple opportunities to meet and collaborate with authors, illustrators, publishers, professors, librarians and other educators and influencers in the young people’s book world - a world that this year includes attendees from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Indonesia, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, and more! Of course, it is also a chance to connect with peers from around the United States. .Along with the amazing line-up of guest speakers, the conference schedule is packed with breakout sessions and workshops that speak to how this community turns reading books of the world into taking action for the world. Those in attendance also have the opportunity to bid on extraordinary items, such as original art from the guest speakers, in the silent auction.
New this year, in an effort to keep costs and waste down and to enrich the attendee experience, registrants receive access to a conference app, Sched, which can be used to find detailed information on each session, preview reading lists for book discussion groups, and customize and keep track of conference schedules. The 13th Biennial Regional Conference in Austin promises to be jam-packed and inspiring. In the few years since IBBY and REFORMA joined forces to provide aid and support, literary and otherwise, for children at the border, conditions have deteriorated even further and access has been prohibitively restricted.
What role can and do USBBY members take? What action? Here former IBBY President and current IBBY Trust Committee President, Patricia Aldana's, provides a first-hand account of what is currently happening with children and children in crisis in Mexico and Central America and along the U.S. border and how USBBY/IBBY is taking action. To read more about Patricia Aldana's latest projects in the publishing world, please read this interview regarding her new imprint, Aldana Libros at Greystone Kids, launching this Fall, which is dedicated to publishing books from around the world. The following 19 nominees, including Anne Pelowski (nominated by USBBY), are finalists for the 2020 IBBY-iRead Outstanding Reading Promoter Award, established by the Shenzhen iRead Foundation and IBBY. The results will be announced at the press conference in Bologna on 30 March 2020.
