Welcome to the new, digital version of the USBBY newsletter, a quarterly aggregate of USBBY/IBBY activities, previews, info, and opportunities to get involved!

With this shift from paper to a digital format, we aim to update, inform and inspire our members and readers more frequently throughout the year. The digital platform allows us to put out calls for participation on committees, share activities from members and partners, provide conference and session reminders, and more - all in real time! Moreover, the digital platform makes our news more immediately accessible to potential members who visit our website. It will show members, potential or new to or lapsed from USBBY, the ongoing efforts and unique value of our organization.

In this inaugural issue you will find information on our New Retail Partnerships, Highlights from International Children’s Book Day, Reflections from Bologna, a wonderful guest post, and enticing information about our biennial Regional conference.

In future issues and intermittent blog posts you will find updates on awards, committee activities, news from organizational partners, invitations to serve, and more guest posts from authors, illustrators, translators, and editors.

Look for the next issue on August 1.

Happy reading!

Each year on April 2, the anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, the world celebrates international children’s books. Here in the U.S. our State Ambassadors marked the 50th anniversary of the occasion in myriad ways around the country.

Iowa - Dr.
Taraneh Matloob Haghanikar, invited her pre-service teachers at the University of Northern Iowa to create word clouds and posters in celebration on ICBD. Click here to see what they produced.

Massachusetts - At the German International School of Boston, State Ambassador Bindy Fleischman hosted a literary trip around the world, where each classroom was a different continent, and students were challenged to read at least one book from each to receive a stamp (cover image) on their passport.
New Jersey - Teresa St. Angelo treated the students in her New Jersey school to a multi-pronged, multimedia, multilingual exploration of Andersen’s work and relevance to global children’s literature, as well as myriad authors and illustrators from around the world who have followed. See her unit plan here.

West Virginia - W.V. State Ambassador, Isaac Larison hosted events at Marshall University, where is he a professor in the Literacy Education Program. Pictured here is Marshall’s president, Jerome Gilbert taking part with the invited guests.

People from throughout the international children’s book community attended the 56th annual Bologna Children’s Book Fair, April 1-4.  Per the BCBF website:

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is the event in the publishing year’s calendar, built around children’s content today.

With over 50 years of experience the fair has succeeded in bringing together a unique and diverse global audience. The result is the world’s premium copyright exchange hub when it comes to publishing and now it includes an extra core that extends to all multi-media and licensing business for children’s content.

Publishers, illustrators, graphic designers, literary agents, authors, translators, mobile developers, licensors and licensees, packagers, printers, distributors, audiobook professionals, booksellers, brands, librarians and teachers flock to the event each spring to experience the business world of books and multimedia products in hundreds of booths across six huge halls.

The world famous Illustrators Exhibition and industry recognized BolognaRagazzi awards are some of key pillars that make this event so special. With more than 26,000 people taking part  in 4 packed days of events, it is a unique mix of a cultural book show and an international rights business forum for all types of content for children.
